For example, below WhatsApp you will come through options like 'Group notifications' and 'Message notifications'. You can toggle the notification categories as per your need which is right next to the notifications.

Now click the 'Sound & vibration' or tap 'Call alert\ringtone' depending on your device. Now you can select a ringtone by tapping ringtone.

Tips: Head to contact app then tap edit if you want to set up different ringtone for individual contacts. You will be headed to the ringtone field. After tapping it you can select the ringtone for the contact you have chosen. Do the same for other contacts as well.
