How To Fix Message Not Sent Error In Android

If you are facing an issue where while you are sending an SMS or a multimedia message you get this error message which says 'Message not sent' in your android phone. Below are the solutions to curb your SMS related downsides on your mobile device or tablet.

This error shows up in your phone for so many reasons, but you don’t have to worry since you can solve issue using the ways given below. Here’s how;


Check Sim/Account Balance


As you all know all mobile network careers charge a certain amount for sending SMS messages. So, if you get this error message please check your account balance and make sure you have enough money in your phone to send the SMS. You should keep in mind that your SMS is charged by the section and also determined by the number of letters you type. If you bypass that specific number, then it is not considered one message so you should have enough credit in your carrier account to cover the extra cost for a long message.


Some of you use the special/exclusive SMS plans. In this case you should check whether the plan is disconnected or not active. There are also chances to get a 'Message not sent' error message if there’s a problem at your carriers’ end, like connection drop or technical failure. If you have enough fund left in your carrier account and still you get the error message, then please look at the solutions given below. If you are enough of trying all the methods given below and if the problem persists then your mobile carrier service should be consulted.

Enable Airplane Mode

If your Android devices cellular connectivity is going through a glitch then this could result in preventing messages from getting sent to the recipient. If you are facing 'Message not sent' error, then you can turn on the airplane mode and turn it off in few seconds. Doing this will mend connection issues and refresh your mobile network so this will fix the 'Message not sent' error.


In the notification panel you will see the airplane icon, you can toggle it on or head to Settings > Network & internet > Advance and now toggle the airplane mode on and then wait for 1 to 10 seconds and then turn it off.

Force Stop Message 

You might have come across certain apps in your Android device that doesn’t work normally sometimes, likewise your message stops responding or crashes to specific commands. When your Android apps or massage malfunctions its much better to force stop it so that it will get restored and function back to normal.

Now let’s take a look at the steps to force stop your Android messages.

Open the setting menu and chose 'Apps & notifications'.


Tap app info or all apps - Please note that this option would change sometimes depending on your OS and brand.


Chose 'Messages' by scrolling down the list of apps.


Click the 'Force stop' icon and you will get a conformation prompt , tap it 'Ok'.


Clear Messages App Cache

You should clear the app cache in the cache directory because sometimes malfunctions in the message app occurs if there are any corrupt files. When you are done clearing the cache, check whether your messages are getting sent. Now close your messaging app and try the steps given below.

Head to home screen and, press and hold the message icon or go to app tray and on the context menu you will find the enclosed (i) icon, simply tap it. Now you will be headed to messages app info menu.


Now chose 'Storage & cache'.


To delete the message app cache, finally hit the 'Clear cache' icon.


Check SMS Permission 

On your Android phone check whether your message or default messaging app has got the permission to send and receive messages and MMS. If you are using the official messaging apps by Google which is inbuilt in your android device, you don’t have to worry as the permission is already allowed by default. In case if you are using any third-party applications for messaging then you have to allow the permission manually for sending and receiving SMS messages on your app.

To check whether you message app has already been granted permission, check below.

Head to setting menu and hit 'Privacy'. 

Chose 'Permission manager'. 

Now select SMS by scrolling down the list of permissions given.

Make sure the message app is in the permitted section.


What if your message app or the third part massage app is not in the allowed section and also not in the denied section? Let’s take a look at the steps below to grant the permission for your message app.

Head to your home screen and press and hold the message icon or go to app tray and in the context, menu hit the closed (i) icon.


Now chose 'Permission' on the message app information page.


Tap SMS and check whether the SMS access is set to allow for the app.

Have you tried all the methods given above but still couldn’t find a solution for the error message? Then you got to check whether the recipients phone number is valid and if you are sending any multimedia attachments then you have to enable the mobile data or the WiFi. 

You should know that some mobile carriers need you to set up a plan for sending multimedia messages. To make sure you have plan check with your network service provider. If nothing else helped restart your device to curb this error message.
